Recognition of Teaching

In recent years UNSW has made sustained efforts to recognise the contribution of staff to teaching during their academic careers. There are a number of measures, both internal and external to UNSW, that seek to recognise excellence in teaching and learning. Several provide financial rewards.

The existing schemes are:

Internal

Vice Chancellors Award for Teaching Excellence

This award formally recognises individual and team-based contributions to quality learning and teaching.

Vice Chancellors Award for Supervision Excellence

This award formally recognises excellence in postgraduate supervision. This award system is separate to the above and is now administered by the Graduate Research School.

 

UNSW Learning and Teaching Awards

These awards form the basis of a grants scheme that has an annual focus on high-priority areas of teaching and learning at UNSW. The grants received by the awardees are used to further work in the high-priority area.

The Promotion System

Recent changes in the promotion system have been instigated to better recognise the place of teaching in the working life of academics at UNSW. Included in the changes are the requirement for all teaching staff to include a teaching portfolio with their application for promotion. The teaching and learning unit has information to assist staff with preparation for the teaching component of promotion applications. Click here.

External

Australian College of Educators Quality Teaching Awards

The ACE Teaching Award is conducted with the support of the NSW Minister for Education. It is an exhaustive evaluation process which involves assessors visiting your classes and talking to your students and colleagues.

Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching

The federally funded Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education offers a number of awards to recognise excellence in teaching. In a number of these awards the Arts and Humanities are in different categories to the Social Sciences. There are also indigenous, early career and priority area categories The awards are:

2. The Prime Minister's Award for the Australian University Teacher of the Year
3. Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning
4. Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning
5. Career Achievement Award
